e-PAN is an instant (paperless) PAN facility which is verified by a digital signature and issued in an electronic format. Just like a physical PAN, it is issued by the Income-Tax Department.

Know your PAN Card


A PAN is a Permanent Account Number. It is a unique identification number for Indian taxpayers. Each taxpayer is mandatorily required to own a PAN for filing income tax returns. Further it is a valid identity proof that can be used for availing several financial services.

A PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric code. The first 5 characters are the sequence of letters, from AA to ZZ. The next 4 characters are the last four digits of the applicant’s birth year in YYMM format. The 9th character is an alphabetic check digit from sequence: C, F, G, H, J, L, P, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z.

How does an e-PAN Work?


An ePAN contains a QR code which has the owner’s demographic details like name, dob or date of birth and a photograph. These details can be accessed through a QR code reader.

The facility of ePAN lets the applicants with a valid Aadhaar number receive PAN on the same day. The PAN is issued in the electronic format i.e. PDF format and there is no cost involved for the applicant. The applicant will also receive a copy of the PAN in their registered e-mail.

Dos & Don’ts of applying for ePAN:


  • A valid Aadhaar number which is not linked to any other PAN
  • The applicant’s mobile number should be registered with Aadhaar.
  • No documentation submission is required.
  • The applicant should not have another PAN.
  • Possession of more than one PAN entails penalty u/s 272B(1) of IT Act.
