What is NPS ?

The National Pension System (NPS) is a government sponsored retirement savings scheme, regulated by Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA). It is a voluntary pension plan which is accessible to all Indians over the age of 18 and offers benefits of a highly flexible, low cost and tax-efficient saving & investment scheme. The NPS subscribers can make contributions as per their choice and frequency i.e. monthly, quarterly or annual in one or more designated pension funds. These funds are market-linked and managed by professionals regulated by PFRDA, thereby providing risk adjusted returns to the investors. It is one of the best investment plans for receiving continuous pension at retirement. There is also the flexibility of an early exit. Long Term Retirement Plan: NPS is a structured savings plan designed for stress free retirement. It offers a secure way to build a corpus for old age.
Two Account Types: You can open two types of NPS Accounts: Tier 1 Account (with tax benefits and lock-in till 60 years) and Tier 2 Account (optional, no lock-in or tax benefits).
Investment Options: Contributions are invested in a mix of Equity, Corporate Bonds, Government Securities and Alternative Investment Funds.
Choice of Allocation: You can select Auto Choice (age-based) or Active Choice (self-decided) for fund allocation.
Withdrawals at Retirement: At 60 years, one can withdraw up to 60% of the corpus, while 40% must be used to buy annuity (pension). Full withdrawal is allowed if the amount is Rs. 5 lakh or less.
Partial Withdrawals: After 3 years, up to 25% of voluntary contributions can be withdrawn for emergency use.

Tax Benefits: Tax benefits up to Rs 200000 under Section 80C & 80CCD (1B) of the Income Tax Act.
Flexible: There is no fixed contribution clause and investor can make flexible contributions as per their choice. However, to maintain your account active in Tier-I, minimum contribution of Rs. 1,000 per annum is required.
Low Cost: The management fees for NPS is low, compared to other pension products.
Portability: The NPS account can be transferred across jobs and locations.
Transparency: The investment statement has clear information on investments and returns.
Secure Retirement: Annuity benefit and lock-in ensure a stable income post-retirement.
