What are Digital Signature Certificates?

A Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) is a highly secure digital file that stores sender’s digital signature and personal details in an encrypted format. It helps the signer authenticate their details and generate a digital signature on legal documents, forms and emails. A DSC is registered by a Certifying Authority (CA), licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authority (CCA). In other words, a DSC is a digital alternative of “wet signature” and accepted legally. In India the Information Technology Act, 2000 governs the use of DSCs for digital environment. A DSC is issued by CA for a limited validity, ranging from 1 year, 2 year and 3 years and thus it is important to get it renewed before expiry.

Types of Digital Signature Certificates

  • Class 2 DSC (Now merged with Class 3):
    • Issued to the authorized signatories
    • Used for filing income tax returns, GST returns and company registrations (on MCA website)
    • Verifies identity against a government-approved database
  • Class 3 DSC:
    • Class 3 DSC is the highest level of security and now mandatory for all government filings & documents
    • Required for e-tendering, e-auctions and other high-value transactions
    • Issued only after in-person verification
    • Multi factor registration for Class 3 DSC is completed on eMudhra Website
    • Issued by authorized Certifying Authorities, Class 3 DSC Price varies as per issuance fee & validity

How DSC Ensures Digital Security

A Digital Signature Certificate ensures secure and tamper-proof digital transactions. When you sign a document, a unique hash is created and it is encrypted with your private key, forming the digital signature. When the receiver receives the signed document, the system generates a new hash and decrypts your signature using your public key. When both the keys match, the document’s authenticity is validated. A DSC prevents unauthorized modifications. Any tempering with the signature or a signed document; will make the digital signature certificate invalid. Likewise, digital signing certificate also ensures non-repudiation, i.e. the signer cannot deny signing of the document. In all, by safeguarding authenticity and integrity, DSC protects sensitive data and builds trust in digital communications.

How to install a Digital Signature Certificate?

It is easy to install DSC. First of all, disable antivirus and use Internet Explorer 9+ for best experience. Plug in the USB token, enter DSC details, verify, select FIPS Token and you will get option to download DSC.
